Peggy Jenkins Wharton, 92 of Etowah, TN passed away at Etowah Health Care on Saturday, June 23, 2018.
Peggy was born in Etowah on July 23, 1925 to Avery Lee Jenkins and Lorena Jenkins. She graduated from Etowah High School and then worked at Oak Ridge where she met and married Arthur Emrie Wharton. Peggy was a member of First Baptist Church of Etowah for many years, though in her later years she was unable to attend services. Her husband was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union 102 of Knoxville and worked as a steamfitter on many jobs in Eastern Tennessee, Alabama, Virginia, Georgia and other states across the country. As his work took him many different places, Peggy shared his passion for traveling, making good friends in many of these states. Both of them could be found at all hours playing dominoes and card games with many of these friends till all hours of the night. Peggy also strongly supported Arthur’s membership and work as a Scottish Rite Mason. In her later years, Peggy was an avid sports watcher. Though she could not attend games, she faithfully watched them on television and particularly enjoyed Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves baseball teams. Peggy is preceded in death by her husband who died in 1976. Peggy is also preceded in death by her mother, Lorena Jenkins, her father, Avery Lee Jenkins; and her brother, Jack Jenkins who managed the Credit Union for Rohm and Hass in Knoxville. After her husband’s death, Peggy attended the Tennessee College of Applied Technology where she trained as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She then worked in hospitals in Athens and Etowah. Peggy is survived by her step-son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Emrie Wharton, Jr. and Jan H. Wharton of Gainesville, FL, her step-grandchildren, Elaine Wharton of Gray, GA, Robert Wharton of Gray, GA, Lesley Wharton Kirby of Washington, DC, Arthur E. Wharton III “Trey” of Cleveland, TN, Roxanne Farmer Gaunt of Palmer, AK, Peggy’s niece, Melinda Lynch of Knoxville, TN, and her grand-niece, Laura Slagle, as well as several special cousins and good friends.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Green Hill Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her husband, her mother and her father. Pastor Allan Lovelace will officiate the service. Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 at Bordwine Funeral Home, 203 Ohio Ave., Etowah, TN 37331 prior to the service.
