Judith “Judy” Rose Baker Pickett, 75, of Charlotte, NC passed away November 21st, 2017, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster.

Judy was born April 1, 1942 in Etowah, TN, the first of two daughters of Elmer Kenneth Baker and Ora Ruth Walls.  She was educated in the Etowah public schools, where her father was a coach, high school principal, and later superintendent of schools for McMinn County.  She was an excellent student and graduated in 1964 from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a degree in home economics.

Judy held many positions in her life, including wife, sister, mother, grandmother, teacher, friend, and employee, all of which she did with distinction.  She worked as a chemical laboratory technician at Fiber Industries Inc. in Charlotte from 1964-1971, taught second grade in her hometown of Etowah from 1971-1974, and afterward taught at Sharon Presbyterian Weekday School in Charlotte for 34 years.  Much of that time she also worked at Black Forest Books and Toys, where she became a specialist in children’s literature. In her later years she joined a prayer shawl knitting ministry at Myers Park United Methodist Church.

Judy had a passion for history, and she was an avid user of Mecklenburg County’s wonderful library system.  After her mother died, she became interested in genealogy and spent the next 40 years unraveling the ancestry of her and her husband’s families.

Judy is survived by her husband, John of Charlotte; daughter Holly Price Roberson of Douglasville GA; grandchildren, Sarah Beth and Will Roberson; brother-in-law, William Pickett of Modesto CA; cousins, Elaine Colson of Etowah, Robert (Charlcia) Baker of Riceville TN, Katherine Ann (David) Carroll of Englewood TN, Phyllis (Arlon) Traylor of Acworth GA, Amelia (Louis) Crumbley of Laurel MS; numerous second and third cousins, and her aunt Sara Walls, also of Laurel.  She was preceded in death by her sister Bettina Baker.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Brookdale SouthPark and at Senior Bridge for their attention to and love for Judy during her struggle with dementia.

Judy will be buried near her parents at Green Hill Cemetery in her home town. A graveside service will be held at 2: 00 p.m., Monday, November 27, 2017 with Rev. Dan Ivins officiating.   A service in Charlotte will be scheduled at a future date.

Memorials may be made to: The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, Radnor Station Building 2, Suite 320, 290 King of Prussia Road, Radnor, PA 19087.

Sorry for your loss of a beautiful lady! I remember Judy as a young girl in Etowah. Then, she came to visit Wesley Methodist Church, her Aunt and cousins most summers and we renewed acquaintance! She had the most beautiful smile and was very intelligent! Praying for your comfort and peace.
